Testimonials

“The relationship that Vestar and Ohio University have with Third Sun is a very professional one. All of their work was done in both a professional and timely manner."
A.S. – Vestar Project Manager, Ohio University

“Third Sun was very easy to work with, and did a wonderful job of coordinating with the many partners in our collaborative effort to put up a photovoltaic array at our local high school. Geoff was great about suggesting ways that we could cut costs to work within our budget. I especially appreciated the way the Third Sun crew worked with our high school student volunteers, involving them in everything from ditch-digging to running wires to erecting the solar array, with lots of explanations along the way."
K.G. – Meadville Energy Project, Pennsylvania

"Geoff and his staff with Third Sun provided the Columbus and Franklin County Metro Parks with the best and lowest bid for constructing a Bergey windmill for the Glacier Ridge Metro Park. Third Sun was awarded the contract and provided professional technical expertise. The project was competed on time and within budget. Geoff assisted our staff with training of the system and continues to support the projects educational message to the public."
S.S. – Glacier Ridge Metro Parks

“Third Sun Solar and Wind Power has been magnificent in their scope of services. The technical and the educational component for our school district students and teachers has been the highlight of our solar schools projects. Their employee Tim Dunning has developed very useful flowcharts and educational tools that he has shared with physics, chemistry and environmental studies students, and he has been an excellent teacher to our kids.”
B.R. – New Albany

“… you do great work. “
M.C. – farmer and biologist in Athens County

Mr. Greenfield’s ability to explain such a complex subject to my elementary students was outstanding. I watched him alter his discussion as each grade level came through to meet with him. All of us, teachers, parents and most importantly the students, learned a lot and were thoroughly impressed with Geoff Greenfield.”
S.E. – Granville Elementary School

Process
The process from inquiry to an installed system usually follows this progression:

  1. Customer makes the initial contact to ask about systems, either by phone, via email or from the web site.
  2. Third Sun returns call or email, sends out information packet or refers customer to website for all information.
  3. The full Inquiry Form is filled out by the customer and returned to Third Sun. See Full Inquiry form on contact us page.
  4. Third Sun makes a follow up call to the customer to answer any questions, and to schedule a site visit.
  5. Third Sun makes a site visit to assess the solar or wind potential; determine possible sites for the system; review the electric usage in the home/building; discuss any permits or agreements necessary. The fee for a site visit is between $150 and $250 depending on distance traveled. This includes site analysis, system design and estimate. The site assessment fee is refunded to the customer if a complete system is purchased from Third Sun Solar and Wind Power.
  6. After the site assessment, Third Sun produces a proposal with a cost estimate, as well as a full system design. We sometimes produce several estimates based on your anticipated budget and needs.
  7. If the customer approves estimate, Third Sun schedules the installation of the system. Payment for equipment is required before Third Sun can proceed with the order.
  8. Installation is completed and system is commissioned, at which time full payment on the balance of the system and installation is required.

The timeframe for the process from inquiry to full system varies greatly according to the size and complexity of the system. Generally, installation of a net metered solar system is much quicker than a large solar/wind hybrid system off the grid.
Adding a renewable energy system to your home is not yet as easy or quick as adding new kitchen appliances (but someday it might be!), so some patience is required. Time is needed for design of the system, pulling of permits, agreements/contracts with utility company, scheduling crews for installation, weather, etc.

Choosing to hire Third Sun Solar and Wind Power puts you in good company! Our services and expertise are in high demand, by homeowners, schools, universities and many others. The company is growing to keep up with this demand, but we will not compromise the quality and safety of our systems in exchange for speed. We work as efficiently as possible and will be honest with customers about the anticipated timing of system installation.

About the Greenfields, owner/operators of Third Sun Solar and Wind Power, Ltd.
Geoff and Michelle Greenfield, along with their two sons, live and work in their off-grid home in Athens County. They have lived off-grid for 6 years, utilizing a 2 kW hybrid solar and wind system, giving them first hand, in-depth and daily knowledge of living with renewable energy. The knowledge and experience that they have with many types of systems components is utilized with every customer, with every system designed and installed.

Producing clean energy as a way to contribute to a cleaner environment was the Greenfield’s primary motivation living off-grid and starting Third Sun. Since 1998, their home has been part of the annual Athens Area Tour of Solar Homes. The family and home were featured in April 2001 Ohio Magazine article “Green Houses” and in the October 2003 Ohio Magazine edition article “Green Living”. Their home is also open many times a year for personal tours for interested customers, potential customers and other curious folks. With Ohio University and Hocking College close by, they also get a regular flow of students from various departments visiting the home. The Greenfield’s have hosted home school groups and presented workshops at local schools on alternative energy. They have been the subject of numerous newspaper articles, TV news stories and journalism student’s assignments.
